FACTORIES AND INDUSTRIAL UNDERTAKINGS (LIFTING APPLIANCES AND LIFTING GEAR) REGULATIONS - REGULATION 17

Drums and pulleys

(1) The owner of a lifting appliance which has a drum or pulley on which a
rope is carried shall ensure that the appliance is not used unless the drum or
pulley is of sufficient diameter and construction for the rope used.

(2) If the rope terminates at the winding drum of the appliance, the owner
shall ensure that the appliance is not used unless-

   (a)  the rope is properly secured to the drum; and

   (b)  at least 2 turns of the rope remain on the drum at every operating
        position of the appliance.
