MERCHANT SHIPPING (SEAFARERS) (CERTIFICATION OF OFFICERS) - SECT 7

Certificates equivalent to certificates of competency or service

(1) Certificates of competency and of service issued under or recognized by
the Merchant Shipping (Certification of Marine Engineer Officers and Licensing
of Marine Engine Operators) Regulations 1986 (S.I. 1986/1935 U.K.) which have
an equivalent under this Regulation, shall be equivalent to certificates of
competency of the same class or description issued under this Regulation.

(2) A certificate of competency, other than one issued under this Regulation,
which was specified before 1 January 1989 by the Secretary of State under
regulation 6(2) of the Merchant Shipping (Certification of Marine Engineer
Officers and Licensing of Marine Engine Operators) Regulations 1986 (S.I.
1986/1935 U.K.) as having the same force as a certificate of a specified class
issued under those Regulations shall be equivalent to a certificate issued
under this Regulation of the same class or description.

(3) A certificate of competency as First Class Engineer or Second Class
Engineer obtained under section 6A of the Merchant Shipping  Ordinance (
Cap. 281) before 1 September 1981 shall be equivalent, respectively, to a
Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 1 and a Certificate
of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 2 issued under this Regulation.

(4) A Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 4 issued under
the repealed Regulations, as in force at any time before the commencement of
this Regulation, shall be equivalent to a Certificate of Competency (Marine
Engineer Officer) Class 3 issued under this Regulation.

(5) A certificate of service as Marine Engineer Officer Class 3 or 4 of a
foreign-going ship granted by the Director of Marine under the
repealed Regulations shall be equivalent to a Certificate of Competency as
Marine Engineer Officer Class 3 issued under this Regulation.

(6) A certificate of service as First Class Engineer or Second Class Engineer
granted under section 99 of the principal Act shall be equivalent to a
certificate of competency issued under this Regulation as it is treated as
equivalent to a certificate of competency issued under the Merchant Shipping
(Certification of Marine Engineer Officers and Licensing of Marine Engine
Operators) Regulations 1986 (S.I. 1986/1935 U.K.).

(7) A certificate of service (Marine Engineer Officer) (River Trade) Class 3
granted by the Director of Marine under the repealed  Regulations shall be
equivalent to a Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) (River
Trade) Class 3 issued under this Regulation. (Enacted 1995)
