Retention of ballot papers

The Chief Electoral Officer shall retain in his custody for a period of not
less than 6 months from the date of the relevant election or by-election, the
documents relating to an election or by-election sent to him by a
returning officer under section 57, and shall thereafter, unless otherwise
directed by an order made by a court in proceedings relating to an election
petition or criminal proceedings, cause them to be destroyed. (Enacted 1995)
