MERCHANT SHIPPING (INSTRUCTIONS TO SURVEYORS) (PASSENGER SHIPS) REGULATIONS - REGULATION 5

Degree of subdivision

Watertight subdivision

Every passenger ship shall be as efficiently subdivided as is possible having
regard to its intended service. The instructions laid down in paragraphs 6 to
14 give effect to this principle by providing for the degree of subdivision to
vary with the length of the ship and with the service in such manner that the
highest degree of subdivision is required in ships of the greatest length
primarily engaged in the carriage of passengers.
